Angry Mob Attacks MTN Office In Lagos Over SIM Card Disconnections

On Monday, an angry mob attacked an MTN office in Festac, Lagos, following the recent disconnection of lines not properly linked to National Identification Numbers (NIN).

MTN Nigeria had implemented a government directive requiring network operators to bar subscribers whose lines have not been linked to their NIN as part of efforts to enforce NIN-SIM linkage across the country.

The Lagos Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating: “This should not be the way to go! Meanwhile, the DPO Festac and his men responded immediately they got this report. They succeeded in restoring normalcy and are still on ground to maintain peace.”

In response, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered all telecommunication operators to reactivate all the SIM blocked over the National Identification Number (NIN) linkage issues.

The regulator gave the directive to all operators on Monday through a statement signed by its Director Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka.
