The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from the Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, organized a solidarity rally on Tuesday, calling for intervention from the governing councils of several universities where lecturers’ appointments have been terminated.
The protest drew attention to issues faced by faculty members at Lagos State University, Kogi State University, Ebonyi State University, Ambrose Alli University, Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu University, and the Federal University of Technology Owerri.
Dr. Shehu El-Rasheed, Chairman of the ASUU branch, and Secretary Mohammed Musa addressed the crowd, condemning the alleged victimization of their colleagues.
They urged the governing councils of the affected institutions to reinstate the dismissed staff, address promotion denials, and release withheld salaries.
El-Rasheed criticized the situation, stating, “Our colleagues in these universities are undergoing different forms of victimization such as illegal termination of appointments, denial of promotions, and withholding of salaries.
Some cases are in court, but due to unnecessary delays, our colleagues are suffering under this difficult economic situation. We believe that justice delayed is justice denied.”
He also emphasized the need for the governing councils to resolve these issues to alleviate the hardships faced by the affected members and ensure the smooth operation of the universities.
