Fabregas Reveals Jorginho’s Weakness

Fabregas Reveals Jorginho's Weakness 5

Cesc Fabregas was full of praise for Jorginho following Italy’s comprehensive 3-0 victory over Turkey in Friday’s Euro 2020 opener but argued themidfielder could add an extra dimension to his game with a more positive approach when in possession.

The 29-year-old Chelsea star was given the nod at the heart of Roberto Mancini’s midfield alongside Nicolo Barella and Manuel Locatelli and the trio appeared in total control as Merih Demiral’s own goal broke the deadlock just after half-time at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Ciro Immobile doubled Italy’s advantage with a clinical strike in the 66th minute and the hosts capped off a dream start to the tournament with a slick move finished off by Lorenzo Insigne in the one-sided Group A clash, the first of 51 matches this summer.

Jorginho has established himself as one of the first names on Thomas Tuchel’s teamsheet since the German replaced Frank Lampard at Chelsea back in January and played a key role as the club secured a top-four finish and lifted the Champions League trophy for a second time in their history.

Speaking in the BBC Sport studio after the game, Fabregas joked it was Jorginho’s arrival at Chelsea that pushed him out the exit door at Stamford Bridge back in 2019 and then dissected the ex-Napoli man’s main strengths and weaknesses.

‘One of the biggest reasons why I left Chelsea was because of him,’ the Spaniard told Gary Lineker.

‘He is a very smart player, intelligent, a good passer of the ball.

‘The only thing that sometimes I could say about him is that he releases the ball too quickly when you can play the ball forward.

‘You can see that he makes the team tick.’

Jorginho was Chelsea’s top scorer last season in the Premier League with a tally of seven goals across the campaign.

There had been speculation Jorginho could be keen to return to Serie A ahead of the 2021/22 campaign but the Brazilian-born Italian looked to shut down the rumours after Chelsea’s Champions League triumph last month.

‘Another year together! This group is family, is team, is home!’ Jorginho posted on his social media pages.

‘We achieved something big and living it with all of you guys made it even more special!

‘Thanks guys see you very soon for many other special moments together.’
