The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has revealed that the Ebola patient in Nigeria is a Swiss national and the wife of a staff member at the country’s embassy in Abuja.
The Nigerian government confirmed a case of Ebola virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, after a woman who recently travelled to Nigeria from Uganda tested positive for the virus.
In an emailed statement, the Swiss foreign ministry said the 42-year-old woman, who was born in Uganda and resides in Abuja, had been hospitalised at a private clinic in the Nigerian capital for about a week after developing symptoms.
The ministry said she is believed to have contracted the virus during a trip to Uganda approximately two weeks earlier.
It added that the woman’s husband who had travelled with her to Uganda, is currently in isolation.
“The woman has been in a private clinic in Abuja for around a week with symptoms. She is believed to have contracted the virus whilst travelling to Uganda around two weeks ago.
“Her husband is in isolation, he has not shown any symptoms. He was travelling with his wife when she is believed to have contracted Ebola,” the statement said.
