Mary Trump, psychologist and niece of President Donald Trump, has sharply criticised her uncle’s decision to launch large-scale military strikes against Iranian targets, claiming the operation was driven by personal motives rather than strategic necessity.
Her remarks followed the United States’ execution of Operation Epic Fury, a major offensive targeting sites in Iran. The White House described the action as the result of the president’s “bold command,” deploying “overwhelming force” in response to what it characterised as escalating threats.
The conflict has had severe humanitarian consequences. Reports indicate that at least 787 people have been killed in Iran, including 165 schoolgirls. The situation deteriorated further following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering additional instability within the region.
Iran responded with drone and missile strikes across the Gulf, targeting locations in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and Cyprus. The breadth of the retaliation has heightened concerns about a wider regional war.
In a video posted to her YouTube channel, Mary Trump Media, titled Trump Declares War to Save Himself, Mary Trump argued that the president had “no interest” in the welfare of the Iranian people.
“The Iranian people have suffered long and horribly under the cruel and repressive authoritarian theocracy currently in power,” she said. “They deserve to be free, and they deserve the ability to determine their own system of governance. But the man who is bombing their country has no interest in them, and he has no plan to create the conditions in which they can become free.”
She further claimed that the administration lacked a coherent long-term strategy, asserting that there had “never been a plan” behind the military escalation. According to her, the president’s pattern is to initiate disruptive actions and leave others to manage the consequences.
“For Donald, there is one reason and one reason alone,” she said. “He’s in trouble, and he knows it. This isn’t simply about changing the subject. This is to keep himself and the world from knowing what an inept, depraved, compromised fraud he is.”
Mary Trump also alleged that the decision to escalate militarily was influenced in part by regional allies, including Saudi Arabia and Israel, though she maintained that it ultimately aligned with the president’s own political calculations.
Israeli officials have defended the strikes. Defence Minister Israel Katz described them as a “pre-emptive attack” aimed at neutralising threats against Israel. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington had prior awareness of Israeli plans and acted in anticipation of a possible Iranian strike.
President Trump has publicly defended Operation Epic Fury. Writing on his Truth Social platform, he argued that Iran’s “menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas and our allies throughout the world.” He also claimed Tehran had been developing long-range missile capabilities that could threaten European allies and potentially the US mainland.
However, a previous assessment by the US Defense Intelligence Agency, reported by CBS News, suggested that Iran would be unlikely to possess missiles capable of reaching US territory until around 2035.
As tensions continue to mount, the prospect of broader regional escalation remains a central concern for global leaders and security analysts alike.
