According to a report by The Punch on Monday, December 22, 2025, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, officially inaugurated Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government on Monday.
The ceremony, held at Lagos House in Ikeja, marks a significant political milestone for the young Obasa, who is the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa.
The new chairman is stepping into big shoes following the resignation of the former boss, Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to recurring health issues. Before this formal swearing-in, Ganiyu Obasa had been serving in an acting capacity.
During the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu didn’t mince words. He reminded the new chairman that the local government is the closest level of power to the people. He urged Obasa to run an inclusive government and avoid “divisive tendencies.”
“Your task is to deepen community development and ensure governance is delivered fairly,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He emphasized that the residents of Agege expect visible results and compassionate leadership, especially in bridging the gap between state policies and local realities.
Obasa’s rise to the chairmanship hasn’t been without its share of drama. Earlier in the year, his interest in the seat faced stiff opposition during the buildup to the 2025 local government elections.
However, after the former chairman’s resignation letter was read on the council floor, councillors unanimously confirmed him.
Alongside Obasa, the Governor also swore in Toyin Adejimiwa as a Permanent Secretary, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to both grassroots politics and civil service excellence.
