MTN senior manager, sales, Mr. Emmanuel Okereke, has said that the prominent network provider is poised to provide Nigerians an Expressway they will be proud of.
Okereke said this at the temporary opening of the rebuilt portion of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Wednesday at the foot of the Amawbia flyover, near Awka, capital of Anambra State.
In the brief ceremony, Okereke urged stakeholders to take ownership of the road and to adhere to traffic rules as stipulated by the Federal Roaf Safety Commission.
He said: “With your continued support, we are confident that this road will be completed within the time stipulated for the project. ”
Earlier the coordinator, community liaison initiative Dr. Reginald Facah described the project as a kind of concept you see more often with oil companies in Niger Delta but that MTN has brought the concept into road construction so that the people around the corridor will have a say and a sense of ownership, a sense of being part of the work process.
Facah said MTN business model is being handled in the road connecting Anambra to the rest of the country.
He praised community leaders and every member of communities around the roads and urged them to take ownership of the project and to ensure unhindered construction work.
Facah said that plans are afoot to clear the tall grasses and bush in the area beyond the road shoulders and drains for aesthetic and security reasons.
He said that MTN brought to play the rehabilitation of of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway
to ensure that the people and communities along the project corridor as well critical stakeholders get a feeling of inclusiveness and ownership during and after the course of the project in their vicinity.
The state director of FRSC Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi praised MTN for the road project saying this time of the year is usually hectic and very busy not only in Anambra State but in the South East.
Irelewuyi noted that people believe that very often good roads cause road crashes but that such accidents are caused by human errors.
He said: ” It is common knowledge that crashes occur more even on good roads but it is a human factor that causes it. Remember it is the living that celebrates”.
He said that opening of the road will signal low fatality and gridlock.
He said the Anambra State chapter of FRSC joins in the nationwide ‘operation zero tolerance’ and has deployed his men to flash points in Anambra State.
It was all praises by the Anambra State Government whose Commissioner for Works and road infrastructure were represented at the occasion.
