As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2024, Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip had little reason to celebrate the new year. Instead of fireworks and festivities, they were greeted by a barrage of rockets and air raid sirens, signaling the continuation of a bloody war that has raged for nearly three months.
Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls Gaza, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a response to Israel’s ongoing blockade and aggression. The group said it fired more than 200 rockets at central and southern Israel, including Tel Aviv, the country’s largest city and commercial hub.
According to Guardian, Israel’s missile defense system, known as the Iron Dome, intercepted most of the rockets, but some landed in populated areas, causing damage to buildings and vehicles. No injuries were reported, but many Israelis spent the night in bomb shelters or safe rooms.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it retaliated with airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza, including rocket launchers, weapons factories, and underground tunnels. The IDF also said it shot down an Iraqi-made drone that was launched from Lebanon by Hezbollah, another Iranian-backed militant group that supports Hamas.
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas breached the Gaza-Israel barrier and attacked Israeli border communities, is the most significant military confrontation in the region since the Yom Kippur War in 1973. It has also sparked clashes in the West Bank, where Palestinian protesters have faced off with Israeli security forces, and on the Israel-Lebanon border, where Hezbollah has fired rockets and infiltrated Israeli territory.
The international community has expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the Israeli blockade has severely restricted the flow of food, fuel, medicine, and other essential supplies. The United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and other countries have called for an end to the violence and a resumption of peace talks, but so far, their efforts have been unsuccessful.
As the new year begins, many Israelis and Palestinians hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but they also fear that the war will drag on, bringing more death and destruction to both sides.
