The Federal Government Of Nigeria says plans are in progress to declare a law banning the consumption of Cow skin, a.k.a ‘Kpomo’ which is the local name.
The Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) Zaria, Prof. Muhammad Yakubu, made the disclosure. He said the decision is made towards reviving the dying tanneries and Leather Industry in the country.
He noted that the habit of eating animal skins, which has no nutritional value should be stopped in order to save the country’s economy.
The DG said:”To the best of my knowledge,Nigerians are the only people in the world who overvalue animal skin as food; after all Kpomo had no nutritional value “.
He further noted that the institute, in collaboration with stakeholders in the industry, would approach the National Assembly and state governments to bring out legislation banning the consumption of Kpomo.
He said:” If we get our tanneries, our footwear and leather production working well in Nigeria, people will hardly get Kpomo to buy and eat”.
