Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after failing in their attempts to seize control of the party’s leadership.
According to Daily Post, the Wike made the remarks on Thursday during a media chat with journalists, in response to the recent defection of several top opposition figures to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where they have formed a new coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
According to the former Rivers State governor, David Mark had ambitions to become the PDP national chairman but was denied the position, prompting his exit along with other political heavyweights, including Atiku Abubakar.
“They wanted to hijack the PDP, and when they couldn’t, they left,” Wike stated, accusing the defectors of forming the new coalition purely out of frustration and desperation to regain power.
Wike urged Nigerians to scrutinize the motives behind the coalition, claiming it comprises individuals who are politically displaced.
“Nigerians need to be careful of these group of Nigerians who are angry because they left power,” he said.“
For how long would you continue to deceive them?”
He further asserted that the opposition has weakened itself ahead of the 2027 polls, declaring, “The opposition has decimated themselves.”
The ADC coalition includes several high-profile politicians and former public office holders, who have declared their intention to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential race.
However, Wike maintains that the alliance is based more on personal ambition than public interest.
