Liverpool star Diogo Jota dies at 28 alongside his brother

The football world is in mourning following the sudden and tragic deaths of Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André in a car accident early Thursday morning. The incident occurred on the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria, Spain, according to reports from the Spanish news agency EFE.

Emergency services confirmed the crash, reporting that a vehicle veered off the road and caught fire at kilometer 65. Both Jota and his 26-year-old brother, who played for Portuguese second-division club Penafiel, were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Diogo Jota, a former Portugal youth international with nearly 50 caps, joined Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £41 million and quickly became a fan favorite, scoring a hat-trick in a memorable 5-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Atalanta. His infectious joy and community spirit were widely praised by teammates and opponents alike.

The Portuguese Football Federation expressed profound sorrow, with president Pedro Proenca stating, “We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will honor their legacy daily.” A minute of silence has been requested before Portugal’s upcoming women’s European Championship match against Spain.

Liverpool FC has yet to issue an official statement, but tributes are pouring in from fans and players worldwide. The football community now grapples with the loss of a rising star and his brother, leaving a void both on and off the pitch.
