A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has discharged the two-count charge of money laundering filed aganst Abdullahi Babalele, a son-in-law to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke who ruled on the case on Monday December 21, struck out the $140,000 fraud charge on ground of wrong venue. He said the case ought not to have been filed in Lagos when the alleged offence was said to have been committed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The Federal High Court judge used the Supreme Court’s decision in a case between the EFCC and Mohammed Dele Belgore on territorial jurisdiction as the basis for his judgement.

Babalele who was arraigned in 2018 and then re-arraigned on October 8, 2019, had been accused by the anti-graft agency of giving former President Olusegun Obasanjo $140,000 on the instruction of Abubakar, who was vying for the office of president in 2019. He however pleaded not guilty on each occassion.
