Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech has revealed that Chelsea manager Frank Lampard convinced him to join the English team.
The 26-year-old will join The Blues after the two clubs agreed a deal of £37million for the Moroccan international. He has agreed to a five-year deal with Chelsea and will become a Premier League player on July 1.
The creative midfielder will remain at the Eredivisie outfit for the rest of the season but is excited to move to London and revealed Chelsea boss Frank Lampard played a ‘big role’ in his transfer.
‘A big role. We had a lot of contact in the last couple of weeks and he gave me a good feeling and that was also big to do with the decision,’ Ziyech told the Chelsea website.
He gave the Chelsea faithful a glimpse of what’s to come earlier in the season, when he claimed three assists in Ajax’s blockbuster 4-4 draw with the Blues in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge.
Ajax were knocked out of the competition at the group stages as Chelsea finished one place above them. Ziyech explained that he is looking forward to playing for a club that plays in ‘big competitions’.
‘Happy, proud, I am excited and I cannot wait,’ he said on joining Lampard’s side.
‘It [Chelsea] is a big club in a big competition. I like the style of play, they play really attacking football, and that is something that fits me and that is one of the biggest reasons I chose therefore.’
Chelsea begin their Champions League knockout rounds with their first leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
